Aug 17 2010 - Road Warriors battle on the Road
Doug Henry Hammers Road Warrior Win At Eastside
'Bird' Blanks Best at Beckley
By Scott Wolfe
MT. ALTO, WV- Sistersville, WV driver Mike 'Bird' Wilson and Beverly, OH driver Doug Henry claimed AMRA (American Motor Racing Association) victories on the Modified Road Warrior Challenge this past weekend at Beckley Motorsports Park and Eastside Raceway in Waynesboro, VA respectively.
Friday, the temperature soared deep into the evening hours and so did "The Bird" Wilson. Wilson captured the lead held off a charging Matt Holcomb to post the ever-important Road Warrior victory. Many of the best AMRA warriors challenged the local hot shoes on the fast 3/8 mile dirt oval.
Despite the sultry weather, track conditions made for some great racing. At the finish the top ten shook down with Mike Wilson the winner, followed by Matt Holcomb, Mike Duncan, Dave Defibaugh, Brett Hamilton, Robert Garnes, Kenny Johnson, Deanna Groves, Joe Hamon, and Jeff Deyton. Heat winners were Mike Duncan and Brett Hamilton.
Saturday evening Eastside Speedway hosted the AMRA Road Warrior Race for the Open Wheel Modifieds and with an assist by Mother Nature the track conditions were near perfect for the event. Dixie Gas & Oil Qualifying showed some fast times with the fast time for the Modifieds going to #77 Dave Defibaugh of Mill Creek, WV after he posted a time of 19.322 seconds.
Heat racing for the Road Warriors was first on the agenda with heat number one going to fast qualifier Dave Defibaugh. Defibaugh held off Tony Garber for the win. Garber was second, Matt Holcomb third, Brandi Breeden fourth and Joe Hamon fifth. Heat number two saw Doug Henry take the lead after a quick restart and cruise to the win from there. Brett Hamilton was second, Russell Erwin third, Eric Erwin fourth and JB Breeden fifth.
The AMRA Road Warriors feature event began with heat winners Dave Defibaugh and Henry pacing the field to the green flag. Henry wasted no time showing his muscle as he went into the lead by lap one. Dave Defibaugh pulled in behind Henry and the pair began to quickly put space between themselves and the field. As the field entered turn three on lap two, Russell Erwin looped it and Brett Hamilton was unable to slow down and hit Erwin in the door.
Tony Garber assumed third and the green once again flew. Henry, Defibaugh and Garber distanced themselves from the pack and left fourth on back to race it out for position. Lap after lap, fourth thru seventh position changed hands with Brandi Breeden, Eric Erwin, Matt Holcomb and Brett Hamilton battling each other very hard. When the checkers flew it was Doug Henry taking the Road Warrior win with Dave Defibaugh second, Tony Garber third, Eric Erwin ending up fourth and Brandi Breeden fifth.
The next Road Warrior event is the AMRA Nationals at Skyline Speedway. The event is part of a three-day Harvest 50 Weekend.
